Micro Flyer 1
Name: Micro Flyer 1
Date: March 2012
Material: R20 Pink Foam
Wingspan: 600 mm
Airfoil: HS520 (chosen over marske7, e336, fauvel, mh44, and sd7062 by doing an X-Foil analysis
Root chord: 150 mm
Tip chord: 100 mm
Sweep: 25 degrees
Propeller: 5 x 3
Motor: Hobby King HK1612 brushless + 10A ESC ; upgraded to Turnigy Aerodrive SK3-2118-3100 Kv brushless (17 g) + 10A ESC
Battery: Turnigy NanoTech 2S 370 mAh 25-40 C LiPo (27 g) ; or Turnigy NanoTech 3S 370 mAh 25-40 C LiPo (39 g)
NP: 90 mm from front tip
Design:
I found out the hard way that the location of the motor affects the pitching moment. The HK1612 motor, although very light, did not give me the speeds I desired, so I replaced it with a Turnigy Aerodrive SK3 brushless motor. I really like the Turnigy Aerodrive series motors - they deliver lots of power for their given weight, and I've never had any problems. I also installed fibre optic LED lights on this plane and flew it a couple times at 12:00 am!
This plane flew extremely well; I am very pleased with the HS520 airfoil - it has very low drag, and low lift, which makes it ideal for fast flying wings.

Unfortunately, the fibre optic lights would come loose after 3-4 landings. I glued the lights back in several times, but the glue was adding weight to the plane and the lights kept falling out. After many crashes, this plane was decommissioned.
